MacKeeper ID Theft Guard

The MacKeeper ID Theft Guard feature helps you maintain control over your online identity. Use this tool to check if multiple email addresses have been compromised in any data breaches. Find which of your passwords are no longer safe and change them right away. What’s more, ID Theft Guard can instantly alert you if your data goes public with built-in 24/7 data breach monitoring.  

Why private data breaches matter  

According to a recent MacKeeper article on top data breaches, most of the 4 billion internet users in the world create accounts for social networking, shopping, playing games, and thousands of other reasons. Usually, these online accounts store important personal information — like names, email addresses, payment details, and so on.


The bad news is that most internet users are also likely to face the theft of their personal records in the future. Over 3.3 billion records were compromised in the first half of 2018 alone. What’s more, the average web-connected computer can face a hacking attack up to every 39 seconds.


Users can fall victim to such attacks if they carelessly used a simple password or clicked a suspicious link. Yet, even the most cautious surfers may have their personal data stolen when hackers attack companies that hold the account data of millions of users. Sometimes human error leads to data misuse and a company accidentally exposes its database.


MacKeeper’s ID Theft Guard can help detect data breaches like these, so you change your leaked passwords to protect your online identity.

How to scan for data leaks

How you can check your private data for breaches depends on whether you’re logged in to MacKeeper or not.  

If you aren’t logged in to MacKeeper

MacKeeper’s ID Theft Guard tool checks the web for data breaches connected to your email address. There are two ways to add your email address:


A: Create a MacKeeper account before scan

When you launch MacKeeper for the first time, you’ll be prompted to create an account to unlock extra functionality:  

  1. Enter your email address
  2. Select the Check if this email gets compromised in data breaches 24/7 checkbox
  3. Click Create account

Next, MacKeeper will automatically check if the email you’ve signed up with exists. If yes, your email address will be scanned for data breaches during the Find & Fix scan. However, you will not be able to see the full results of the scan until you verify that you own the email account. The program will prompt you to verify the address within the ID Theft Guard tool.


If the email you’ve signed up doesn’t exist, in the Find & Fix tool you will see a message that "Privacy Protection is off". MacKeeper will ask you to provide a real, correct email address in the Find & Fix scan results:

If you skip the signup step or sign up with the non-existent email, use option B.  


B. Use the ID Theft Guard feature

To scan your email for compromises in data breaches:  


Step 1.  Open the ID Theft Guard tool

  1. Open MacKeeper
  2. Select ID Theft Guard from the left sidebar
  3. Click the blue Open button at the bottom


Step 2. Create a MacKeeper account

  1. Enter the email address you want to use to check for breaches
  2. Select your preferences for MacKeeper email offers and newsletters
  3. Make sure the Check if this email gets compromised in data breaches 24/7 checkbox is selected
  4. Click Create My Account

If you’re logged in to MacKeeper

In case you’re already logged in to MacKeeper with an existing MacKeeper account, you’ll see the following screen:

To add your email:

  1. Click Scan new email in the left panel
  2. Alternatively, click Scan new email in the orange window at the bottom of the right panel
  3. Enter the email address in the right panel
  4. Click the blue Scan Email button below

What to do if no data breaches are found

If your email wasn’t compromised in data breaches, your private data is still safe. To keep it that way, ID Theft Guard will offer you to turn on data breach monitoring, a feature that permits ID Theft Guard to scan the web 24/7 for any leaked account credentials and alert you if it finds any. To set up monitoring, click Continue in the bottom of the right panel.

What to do if data breaches are found

If ID Theft Guard has found at least one data breach connected to your email address, you can see specifically what private data was leaked. However, because we respect consumer privacy, we first verify that you own this email address before showing sensitive leaked data.

1. Click the blue Verify Email button at the bottom of the right panel

2. Go to your inbox and find an email with the subject ID Theft Guard Verification Required

3. Copy the 4-digit code highlighted in blue

4. Go back to the MacKeeper window, paste this code into the right panel, and click Enter

5. You’ll see a green message if verification was successful

6. Next, you’ll see the list of data breaches connected to your email address

The right panel of the ID Theft Guard window displays a preview of the data breaches your email was compromised in. In the preview, you’ll see the following:

  • Breach source:
    • the name of the service from which the account data was leaked
    • the name of the massive data breach that the leak is a part of
    • sources that can’t be displayed for legal reasons are marked as “Sensitive Source”
  • Leaked password preview
  • A Show password link that displays the full leaked password when clicked
  • The three-dot icon ⋯ with options for actions related to this data breach


If you need more details about a found data breach, click the ▶ triangle button to the left of the source title in order to read the breach description.


There are two types of breach descriptions:

  • Known data breach: you’ll see the name of the services from which the data has been leaked at the top. The breach description will let you know when and how this service database was leaked.

  • Unknown data breach: you’ll see the reason why we can’t reveal the name of the breach source (usually, this occurs when revealing a source would compromise a breach investigation)

How to change leaked passwords

If you see that any passwords for social media, financial, or other accounts were leaked, we recommend you change them right away. This will help you protect your private data from identity theft.  


To change a leaked password, please do the following:


1. Click Show password to view the full password that was leaked


2. If you don’t remember using a password like this, click the question mark icon


Some passwords are shown as encrypted. Either you’ve encrypted them, or they were encrypted by the service owner. Chances are high that if an encrypted password was leaked, your real one is safe. Still, we recommend you change it for extra security.

3. Click the three-dot icon in the top-right corner of the data breach section


4. Select Change password, and change the password in your browser

For privacy reasons, you need to change each breached password manually. After clicking Change password, the webpage of the service will automatically open in your browser. You’ll have to log in and change the leaked password.  


For some breaches you cannot change passwords. These are sensitive breaches, and there will be no Change password option because there is no associated website. If you see a password breached as part of a sensitive breach, you should review all your web accounts to ensure none of your current passwords match the breached data. Furthermore, you should strictly avoid using the breached password again at any point in the future.


5. After you change your password, click the three-dot icon and select Mark as changed

6. Only after you’ve carefully reviewed each data breach and changed passwords for every data breach possible, you can click the blue Mark All As Changed button at the bottom of the right panel

How to start monitoring leaks and data breaches

ID Theft Guard allows you not only to change leaked password but to also turn on around-the-clock monitoring for new data breaches and get early alerts if your private data is ever compromised.


This feature is called Data breach monitor. It regularly and automatically checks web accounts connected to the emails you've added to ID Theft Guard. If any of your connected account data is compromised, you'll get alerts, so you can protect your data from identity theft.


To turn on data breach monitor for a specific email:

  1. Click the Turn on button in the top right corner of the MacKeeper window
  2. Alternatively, you can click the three-dot icon in the top-right corner next to your email address
  3. Next, select Turn on monitoring from the list

To turn on data breach monitor for all of the emails you’ve scanned:

1. Click the ID Theft Guard icon at the top of the left panel

2. If you need more information about data breach monitor, click the i icon in the center of the right panel

3. Click the blue Turn On Monitoring button at the bottom of the right panel

If you see Data breach monitor is green, this means your email address is being scanned 24/7 for any data breaches.  

How to add or remove emails in scan for data leaks

To scan a new email with ID Theft Guard, do the following:

  1. Open ID Theft Guard from the left sidebar
  2. Enter the email address in the right panel
  3. Click the blue Scan Email button below

To remove the email you’ve previously added to ID Theft Guard, do the following:

  1. Open ID Theft Guard from the left sidebar
  2. Select the email you’d like to remove from the left panel
  3. Click the three-dot icon in the top-right corner of the window
  4. Select Remove email from the list

Important: the email you’ve logged in with cannot be removed unless you log out. All other emails that you’ve added to ID Theft Guard can be easily removed or added again without using the steps mentioned above.
