Wanna Decrypter 2.0 and Importance To Stay Up-To Date. All You Need to Know.
Last Friday, ransomware called Wanna Decrypter 2.0 had attacked the hospitals across the UK, and then had continued attacks around the globe. The attacks were similar to a fast spreading flu virus.
How Did the Attack Look Like?
The ransomware called WannaCry, WCry, WanaCrypt, and WanaCrypt0r encrypts the victim’s files by changing filename extensions to .wnry, .wcry, .wncry, and .wncrypt. Then the victims may see the following message:
How the Ransomware Appears on Computers?
Apparently, the attack exploited a Windows vulnerability that had been patched by Microsoft in March. Microsoft describes the issue in its MS17-010 bulletin.
Who Has Fallen Victim to the Ransomware?
Globally over 126,000 victims in 104 countries have fallen victims to the ransomware, and this number is increasing. The primary countries of ransomware attack were Ukraine, Russia, and Taiwan, the others were located in Western Europe.
The ransomware problem affects only Windows users who have not got the latest patched updates. If you followed the latest Microsoft updates and run security software, then your machine is protected.
MacKeeper strongly recommends following these security measures for those users who has Windows installed on a Mac:
Get the latest patched updates even if you are running the supported versions of the operating system (Windows Vista, Windows Server 2008, Windows 7, Windows Server 2008 R2, Windows 8.1, Windows Server 2012, Windows 10, Windows Server 2012 R2, Windows Server 2016).
Keep the data on your machine always backed-up, whether there are potential threats or not. Backup regularly and keep the copies offline.
Stay away from unsolicited attachments in social media and email, don’t open the emails from unknown senders, and don’t click the links in such emails.
Use security software which stops ransomware, also keep it up-to-date.
