FAQ

What is MacKeeper?

MacKeeper is all-in-one macOS utility software with security, cleaning, performance and privacy features.

Is MacKeeper safe?

Yes, MacKeeper is safe. MacKeeper is notarized by Apple and certified by AV-TEST and AppEsteem.

Is MacKeeper a virus?

No, MacKeeper is not a virus. MacKeeper is all-in-one macOS utility software.

Is MacKeeper an Apple product?

No, MacKeeper is not an Apple product. It is a macOS application developed and owned by a Clario Tech DMCC.

Why do some security programs still flag MacKeeper as a PUP?

MacKeeper was previously flagged by certain antivirus vendors due to advertising practices under Kromtech's ownership, including misleading notifications and overly aggressive pop-up alerts. These practices were completely discontinued following a change in ownership to Clario Tech.

MacKeeper 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7 versions don't display unsolicited alerts, use push-based advertising, or engage in any behavior associated with the earlier classification.

It's worth noting that antivirus PUP (Potentially Unwanted Program) classifications are updated on varying schedules. Some vendors respond quickly to changes, while others may retain historical flags for longer periods. We are actively working with all relevant vendors to ensure the classification is reviewed and updated accordingly.

How has MacKeeper changed since its acquisition by Clario Tech?

Since becoming part of Clario Tech, MacKeeper has focused on continuous product improvement, transparency, and meeting modern security standards. The team has invested in enhancing detection technologies, overall performance, and user experience.

MacKeeper has also obtained independent certifications that proves its effectiveness and reliability, including AV-TEST for security performance and AppEsteem for compliance with modern digital safety and user protection standards. These efforts reflect a stronger commitment to quality, trust, and industry best practices.

Does MacKeeper use 'scareware' tactics to find problems?

No, MacKeeper does not use scareware tactics. It relies on legitimate detection methods to identify security, privacy, and performance issues on your Mac. All scan results are based on actual findings, not exaggerated or misleading warnings.

If MacKeeper requires access to sensitive areas of your system (such as Full Disk Access), it will always request your permission first through macOS. You remain in full control and can choose to grant or deny access at any time.

Why doesn't MacKeeper include a built-in Firewall?

A firewall operates at the network level and requires deep integration with the system's core to manage incoming and outgoing connections. MacKeeper focuses on scanning for and removing malware, adware, and other threats, rather than controlling network traffic. Additionally, running multiple firewalls simultaneously can cause connectivity issues and may block legitimate applications, so it's generally safer to rely on macOS's built-in firewall or another dedicated solution for network protection.

How is MacKeeper optimized for Apple Silicon (M1/M2/M3/M4 chips)?

The latest generation of MacKeeper (version 7.0 and above) is built with native support for ARM architecture, enabling full compatibility with Apple Silicon chips (M1, M2, M3, M4, and newer). This means MacKeeper runs natively without relying on Rosetta emulation, resulting in improved performance, faster scans, and better energy efficiency for your Mac.

Why should I pay for MacKeeper if macOS has built-in security (XProtect)?

While macOS includes XProtect, which automatically blocks most known malware, it is limited when it comes to new or "grey area" threats such as adware and potentially unwanted programs (PUPs). MacKeeper provides real-time protection, advanced scanning, and tools specifically designed to detect and remove these emerging or less obvious threats, giving you an extra layer of security beyond the built-in macOS defenses.

Can I use MacKeeper alongside other security tools?

Yes, you can install and use multiple security tools on your Mac. In fact, MacKeeper goes beyond traditional security by also offering features for cleaning, privacy, and performance optimization. However, running more than one real-time protection tool at the same time may cause conflicts and increase system load, so it's generally not recommended to enable multiple real-time protection features simultaneously.

What is your VPN logging policy?

We do not monitor or store any data transmitted through the VPN tunnel. We may collect limited usage data — such as IP address, general location and how you interact with our services. This data is used solely to help identify and troubleshoot VPN-related issues when users contact customer support, and is processed based on your consent.

How does MacKeeper protect my data during an 'ID Theft Guard' scan?

During an ID Theft Guard scan, sensitive information is masked by default to protect your privacy. Full details are only revealed after you verify ownership of your email address. Once verified, you receive a secure personalized detailed report that includes information about any detected data breaches. All data is protected using encryption to ensure it remains safe at every stage.
