How to Turn Off Safari Notifications on Mac

To turn off Safari notifications on Mac, go into the Apple browser’s Settings menu and select Websites > Notifications. Here, we see a list of sites that have permission to send us alerts, and we can block each one individually by selecting Deny in the drop-down box next to each one. We can also stop all sites from asking to show notifications in future.

What are Safari notifications on Mac?

Safari notifications within Apple’s macOS are alerts sent out by websites. They work similarly to the notifications we receive from native Mac apps, and they only appear after we’ve given a website permission to send them, which we may sometimes do inadvertently.

By default, website alerts appear as a banner in the top-right corner of your MacBook screen, then they go to Notification Center so we can catch up on them later. You’ll receive them even when the Safari app is closed, so you won’t miss them when you’re not actively browsing the web.

Remember that website notifications are different from pop-ups, which appear in a separate browser window. Pop-ups usually display ads or take you to other websites, and most modern browsers, including Safari, block them by default—but you can learn how to allow pop-ups on Mac if you want to see them.

A note from our experts:

We’ve found that Safari’s built-in pop-up blocker usually isn’t enough to provide an enjoyable browsing experience, given that most of today’s websites tend to be filled with ads. But we can easily put a stop to these and block privacy-invading trackers with MacKeeper’s StopAd from Clario Tech.

Here’s how to set it up:

  1. Install MacKeeper on your Mac.
  2. Choose StopAd in the MacKeeper sidebar, then click Open.
  3. Click Enable next to Safari (or Chrome if you prefer to use Google’s browser).
  4. Complete the setup process to enable the StopAd extension.

How to stop Safari notifications on Mac?

We can block notifications from Safari on MacBook by going to Safari > Settings in the menu bar, then selecting Websites > Notifications. You’ll see a list of sites that have permission to send alerts; use the drop-down menu next to each one to allow or deny it. In the same window, you can stop all notification requests from Safari going forward.

We’ve found that some Apple Safari users accidentally give websites permission to send notifications without even realizing it. Others are initially happy to allow alerts from certain sites, but then they change their minds later on. Whatever the case may be, here’s how you can disable Safari notifications on Mac:

  1. Disable notifications from specific websites: In Safari’s Settings menu, you can set permission for each website individually.
  2. Turn off websites from asking for notification permission: Change this Safari option to block notification requests from all sites in the future.

1. Disable notifications from specific websites

It’s very easy to stop Safari notifications on Mac from specific websites. Simply follow these steps:

  2. Click the Websites tab, then select Notifications.
  3. Go through the list of sites that have permission to display notifications through Safari, then select Deny next to any you want to block.

2. Turn off websites from asking for notification permission

After using the solution above to block Safari alerts we no longer want to see, we can also stop websites from asking for permission to display notifications going forward with just one click. Try this:

  1. Go to Safari > Settings in the menu bar.
  2. Navigate to Websites, then select Notifications.

It’s easy to take control of this feature in Safari’s settings menu.
