How to factory reset macOS Monterey

To factory reset macOS Monterey, start by backing up your data to prevent data loss. The next step is to unlink licensed apps. Sign out of iCloud and Apple ID. Use the “Erase All Content and Settings” feature. Finally, reset your Mac via Recovery Mode.

Don’t worry, we’ve detailed the exact steps for each solution below. Follow them carefully to factory reset macOS Monterey without hassle.

1. Backup your data

Because resetting Monterey to factory settings erases all of its files, we always start by backing up all our data to ensure we don’t lose it. You can either do this on an external storage device or using Mac’s Time Machine tool. In this guide, we’ll focus on the Time Machine method.

Here's how to back up your personal data using Mac’s Time Machine:

  1. Connect an external hard drive to your Mac (make sure you choose one with enough storage space to store all your files).
  2. Go to System Preferences and open Time Machine.
  3. Now decide whether you want to enable ongoing backups or simply back up your files immediately. Once you’ve made your decision, choose the relevant option between Back Up Automatically and Back Up Now.
  4. Verify that your backup is complete within Time Machine.
Time Machine is opened on a Mac. Choose a backup option to back up and protect your data before factory resetting macOS Monterey.

2. Unlink licensed apps

Do you have apps linked to your Apple ID on your Mac? You’ll need to sign out of them before saying goodbye to your MacBook to protect your data. Apps like Adobe Acrobat Reader and others can be accessed by the new Mac owner, so we always make sure we unlink our accounts before any handovers. The same goes for your Apple account and Apple apps. We always deauthorize our Apple account on a Mac to prevent others from accessing any content we previously purchased from Apple services associated with our Apple ID.

Follow the steps below to deauthorize your Mac:

  1. Open the Music app.
  2. Go to the menu bar and click on Account > Authorizations > Deauthorize This Computer.
The Music app is opened on a Mac. Unlink licensed apps and deauthorize your computer from the Music app to protect your data.

3. Sign out of iCloud and Apple ID

For a seamless setup on your new MacBook, sign out of iCloud to disable Find My and Activation Lock. From our test, this also prevents unauthorized access to your account.

Here’s how to do it:

  1. Click on System Preferences > Apple ID > Overview > Sign Out.
  2. Select the iCloud data you want to keep a copy of and hit the Keep a Copy button.
Apple ID settings are opened on a Mac. Sign out of your iCloud and Apple ID before performing a macOS Monterey factory reset.
